The Program
The JMBD HBCU Legacy Scholarship supports graduating high school seniors heading to Historically Black Colleges and Universities while carrying the loss or absence of a father.
It was created by founder AJ Adams, who lost his father to gun violence at four years old. His own path through two HBCUs — Howard University and Fayetteville State University, where he earned his degree — shaped his belief that circumstances do not define potential.
Three awards of $1,000. One in Washington, DC. One in Maryland. One in Virginia.
Applicants compete only against other students from their own state.

What to do between now and January
- Apply to the HBCUs you're considering this fall. You'll need an acceptance letter for the scholarship application.
- Complete the FAFSA when it opens — this $1,000 sits on top of financial aid, it doesn't replace it.
- Think about who'd write you a recommendation. A teacher, counselor, coach, mentor, boss, or someone from your church all count.
- There's no minimum GPA. Don't count yourself out.

Can I apply right now?
Not yet. Applications open January 5, 2027. Add your name today and we'll email you the day they do.
Why the wait?
Most seniors don't have an HBCU acceptance letter until winter. Opening in January means you'll have what you need when you apply.
Do I need a minimum GPA?
No. The program looks at resilience, character, leadership, and where you're headed.
I don't live in the DC area. Am I eligible?
If you live anywhere in DC, Maryland, or Virginia, yes. Every county, ward, and independent city.
What if I haven't picked an HBCU yet?
Sign up anyway. You'll need to be enrolling at an accredited HBCU in fall 2027, but you don't need to have decided today.
Do I have to submit a death certificate?
No. We never ask for that. You'll name one adult — a counselor, coach, mentor, or community leader — who can speak to your situation if we reach out.
Can a counselor or parent sign a student up?
Yes. The form has a setting for that.
How is the money paid?
Directly to your school's financial aid office once fall 2027 enrollment is confirmed.
